This two week expedition begins with the Aysen Glacier Trail (AGT). A trekking circuit that is on par with the Milford Track or Torres del Paine (without the crowds), the AGT contours and meanders through forest, rock, and ice for 60 kilometers. Punctuated fore and aft by deep glacial lakes, the route is cut off from the outside world. Tracing the inside edge of the northern Patagonian ice cap with dramatic views of the southern Andes, we’ll trek for six days between the primeval headwaters of three Rio Baker tributaries, finishing at a gaucho campo on the Rio de la Colonia. A day’s walk down the beautiful Colonia Valley, the expedition boards rafts and rows the Baker to the South Pacific fjords
With stunning camp locations, gaucho porters, horse packers and guides, this trip balances remote and rugged exploration with light packs, unique cultural elements, and an unexpected measure of comfort. Sharing yerba mate with a gaucho or enjoying a glass of wine and lamb asado at the Sol de Mayo, this expedition gets to the heart of Chilean Patagonia.
